Surprise in Romanian tennis: Horia Tecău has resigned

Horia Tecău has decided to end his term as captain of the Billie Jean King Cup women’s team, after over three years in charge.

The announcement was made on social media, where the former doubles champion expressed gratitude, without explaining the reasons for his withdrawal.

"I have ended with gratitude the role of captain of the Billie Jean King Cup team. A valuable experience, full of collaborations with extraordinary people. Thank you to those who have been close!" Tecău wrote.

Tecău took over the team in the spring of 2022, before the confrontation with Poland, lost by Romania with a score of 4-0, a result that sent the team to the relegation playoff to stay in the elite group.

In 2024, under his command, Romania reached the final tournament in Malaga, but was eliminated in the round of 16 by Japan, with a score of 2-1. The team at that time included players like Jaqueline Cristian, Ana Bogdan, Gabriela Ruse, Anca Todoni, and Monica Niculescu.

The year 2025 was much more challenging. With a team in the midst of a process of change and rejuvenation, Romania lost both matches in Group A of the qualifiers: 0-3 to Japan and 0-3 to Canada.

The difference in experience and level of play was clear, and the Romanian players were unable to cope with their opponents.
