The scenario of Donald Trump’s return to the White House also depends on the hypnotic ability that charlatans have over communities, argues political scientist Vladimir Tismăneanu.
In the interview given to spotmedia.ro, he succinctly analyzes the reasons why Trump is in the spotlight of the elections, despite the scandals surrounding him.
"For me, Trump is a charlatan. But charlatans can hypnotize entire communities.
However, I do not see how Trump can use the anti-systemic card, after being president himself for four years. Trump's 'offer' is a continuous play of populist fireworks, nebulous promises, and abuse of patriotic sentiments.
It seems to me that Trump has lost what could have been taken as charisma. He has become banal. But I hasten to add: he must not be underestimated under any circumstances."
On the other hand, the entire West is faltering, along with the rise of extremist political platforms.
"Political modernity is under attack. Fears of the '30s are being resurrected. A Viktor Orban celebrates 'illiberal' democracy. I do not idealize bourgeois modernity, but I know exactly how dangerous the attempts to destroy it are," says Vladimir Tismăneanu.
