Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, launched a new attack against Romania, stating that any election held without the participation of Calin Georgescu is „illegitimate.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also criticized our country, saying that „blatant things are happening in the electoral field in Romania.”
The statements come in the context where the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) decided to reject his candidacy in the presidential elections on May 4.
Also on Tuesday, March 11, the Russian press described Romania as a "tyranny."
Kremlin Jumps to Georgescu's Defense
Dmitry Peskov delivered a clear message during a press conference, accusing Romania of undermining democratic principles, as reported by TASS.
"Of course, if we are to call things by their name, any election held without him (Georgescu) will not be legitimate," declared the Kremlin's spokesperson.
Peskov emphasized that rejecting Georgescu's candidacy represents "a violation of all democracy norms in Central Europe."
"In this case, Romania has chosen the path of contempt for democracy itself," he added.
At the same time as the pro-Georgescu stance, the Kremlin rejects speculations about Moscow's possible involvement in his candidacy.
"They accuse the country of some kind of involvement with Georgescu, which is total nonsense. This is a completely groundless accusation," stated Peskov, quoted by the regnum.ru agency.
Lavrov Also Criticizes Romania
On the other hand, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday, in a critical charge against the West, that "blatant things are happening in countries like Romania in the electoral field."
He accused the West of no longer believing "in anyone other than Satan" and accused it of doing everything to make the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) cease to exist. Lavrov made this statement after discussions with the OSCE Secretary-General, Feridun Sinirlioglu, and in a broader dispute over the organization's budget, he raised the issue of the body that monitors European elections, ODIHR, accusing it of being impartial.
According to the Russian Foreign Minister, with the help of the secretaries-general and former presidents, a tradition has been established where this office is almost entirely made up of citizens of NATO and EU countries.
"And they determine voluntarily the format and size of election observation missions. They send two people somewhere and 300 people elsewhere. They focus primarily on so-called Eastern countries, while countries like Romania, for example, where blatant things are happening in the electoral field, are not subject to any claims," accused Lavrov.
Russian Press: Romania is "Under Tyranny"
The Regnum news agency writes on Tuesday, March 11, that the decision to exclude Georgescu from the presidential race represents an act of political oppression, "a direct blow to democracy and indicates that the country is under tyranny."
Supported by SVR
Recall that last week the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) stated that the Prosecutor's decision to press charges against Calin Georgescu is supported by the EU leadership, which aims to defeat anti-system leaders in various countries.
The SVR stated on March 4, in a press release, that Brussels is waging a war against European leaders who openly support US President Donald Trump.
It is exactly what the defendant Calin Georgescu says, who accuses a political case, and now enjoys the overt support of Moscow.
Recall that Georgescu is indicted for six crimes, including incitement to actions against constitutional order.
According to information obtained by prosecutors, there are clear links between the funding of Georgescu's campaign and Russia.
Also last week two Russian diplomats were declared personae non gratae on Romanian territory. One of them is named Evgheni Ignatiev. And his name appears in Georgescu's case as a liaison with his supporters' network.

Why Was Calin Georgescu's Candidacy Rejected
The Central Electoral Bureau rejected Calin Georgescu's candidacy for the May presidential elections, according to a statement released Sunday night by the BEC.
In the reasoning published by BEC a few hours after the decision, we see that the rejection is based on constitutional grounds, relating to the Constitutional Court's decision to annul the 2024 presidential elections and the decision to reject Diana Șoșoacă's candidacy.
