George Simion makes an inflammatory statement against his opponent in the second round of the presidential elections, Nicușor Dan, whom he accuses of preparing „a violent demonstration” in Victory Square, right on the evening of the election. The AUR leader claims that the Mayor of Bucharest irresponsibly authorized a political rally aimed at contesting the elections, using the institution’s resources for electoral purposes.
"If he has even a shred of responsibility, I urge him to cancel this demonstration, which appears to be a violent one, one against democracy and the Romanian people," Simion stated, without specifying exactly what evidence he has or what protest he is referring to.
The only authorized public gathering in Victory Square for the election night, Sunday, May 18, is a rally organized by the civic groups "Corruption Kills," "Resistance," and the MEA Association, under the name "Either at the ball or at the hospital." The event, scheduled to start at 8:00 PM, is described by the organizers as a peaceful, pro-European demonstration.
Nicușor Dan: I Only Signed the Approval Documents, I Will Not Get Involved
In response, Nicușor Dan categorically rejected the accusations.
Invited on Romania TV, he stated that he does not intend to challenge the election results, regardless of the outcome. "I hope to win the elections. In the event that I lose, I will not contest. The result that the Romanians will give, that will be it," Dan affirmed.
He emphasized that he is not involved in the organization of the demonstration and that he only signed the legal approval of the request submitted by the initiating NGOs: "On Sunday, Romanians want to demonstrate pro-Europe. I only signed the approval documents, I will not get involved."
These tensions arise against the backdrop of an increasingly aggressive electoral campaign, with direct accusations and a heightened climate of polarization among the electorate.
