At the beginning of April, after signing the decrees appointing chief prosecutors, even though some of them received a negative opinion from the CSM, Nicușor Dan came out in front of the public opinion and, through a long statement, justified his decision.
„… I was very happy when I saw that prosecutor Mrs. Chiriac, who led DNA Iași, was running for the position of Prosecutor General, and I was very happy when I saw that Mr. Miron was running for the position of DIICOT chief prosecutor, and of course, after passing the test at the Ministry of Justice, I was even more pleased and waited to appoint them…”, stated the President of Romania in a plea supporting the decision made, although it was met with great suspicion by some of his supporters, as well as by the Prosecutors’ Section of the CSM.
From that moment on, in my opinion, the General Prosecutor’s Office, DNA, and DIICOT started to act serving the political interests of the head of state, even though this caused various shocks in public opinion and further compromised, if possible, the act of justice.
In association with PSD and magistrates under the influence of Judge Lia Savonea, the judicial system began hunting down the leaders of PNL and USR, demolishing the two parties that decided, after the motion of censure, not to form any political alliance with PSD.
The Favorite, in Action
Yesterday, the prey of the DNA prosecutors in Iași, where Cristina Chiriac was the chief, the favorite of the president, was named Cristina Trăilă, Deputy Secretary General of the Government led by Ilie Bolojan, former PNL deputy.
The PSD-controlled press received a new non-issue and a great opportunity to beat the drum about how "bad" Ilie Bolojan is and how corrupt his people are.
Trăilă is "suspect" for "complicity in using influence or authority to obtain, for oneself or for another, money, goods, or other undue benefits..."
In other words, nothing. She is being investigated because she allowed the millionaire Fănel Bogos to reach Ilie Bolojan's office to complain about the injustices done to him by the Sanitary-Veterinary Authority, which closed a number of his farms.
Bogos' intervention with the prime minister had no effect, but Nicușor Dan's DNA could not miss the opportunity to cut off another head in Bolojan's PNL. The coup plotters are safe, even though Veștea is involved in a major corruption scandal.
Cristina Trăilă seems to be the latest victim in a series of investigations by prosecutors and dubious decisions by magistrates who are already openly acting on political orders.
Spotmedia.ro was the first publication to write, at the beginning of July, that the DIICOT operation in Dumbrava, Bihor County, was a staged event aimed at compromising Ilie Bolojan.
Since then, everything that has happened in that case has confirmed that the anti-mafia prosecutors were used for political purposes.
In mid-June, Ciprian Ciucu, the popular mayor of Bucharest, was placed under judicial control by DNA prosecutors in a corruption case related to funding from a third party during the electoral campaign.
This is happening in a country where Călin Georgescu campaigned with millions of euros for the presidency and no one asked him about his health until he won the first round of the presidential elections, despite officially stating that he did not invest a single euro in electoral promotion.
The Fritz Amendment
To overthrow Dominic Fritz, prosecutors, judges, PSD and AUR parliamentarians, as well as 5 CCR judges were used.
The goal was to drive the leader of USR out of the Timișoara City Hall, who refuses to bow down to Nicușor Dan and support a PSD government.
Many well-meaning individuals refuse to accept the idea that political leaders can be so despicable, tempted, rightly so, to consider the above examples as mere coincidence, and that the authorities are doing their duty.
The best argument to dismantle this reasoning is to apply inverse logic.
Generally, in cases of major corruption, prosecutors' investigations and trials are set in motion after a large part of public opinion learns extraordinary information about a certain politician, businessman, or following a shocking event.
Most of the prosecutors' investigations into acts of corruption are based on previous facts and events that had a certain type of impact on society, either locally or nationally.
When Are Romanian Prosecutors Fighting Corruption?
Iulian Dumitrescu (PNL), the President of Prahova County Council, investigated by DNA at the beginning of 2024, is an example where prosecutors acted following his displayed wealth, as well as dozens of articles and press investigations presenting his repeated violations of the law.
In the Nordis case, prosecutors' investigation does not start until there is a true national scandal caused by a Recorder documentary in which hundreds of people complain about being deceived by the respective company. And so on.
Every time an anti-corruption action by prosecutors emerges out of the blue, targeting a person, company, or non-governmental organization without a wealth of information, events, facts, and behaviors indicating a violation of the law within society, I believe that investigation is artificial, initiated on orders, for political purposes, or purposes induced by powerful influence groups.
It is important to know that prosecutors in Romania, regarding corruption investigations, act only in two cases and never self-initiate:
- They receive orders from superiors;
- A major public unrest arises following an event, press revelations, or protests;
The Head of the System Remains Silent
There is a stark difference between Nordis watches, trips, or Sorin Grindeanu's shoeboxes and the forced accusations against Viorel Pașca, Ciprian Ciucu, Dominic Fritz, or Cristina Trăilă.
In the case of none of the recent victims of the Romanian justice system, there are precedents of corruption, there is no public image portraying them as criminals or as having benefited personally or for the benefit of a privileged group from their positions.
Nicușor Dan, not long ago, publicly declared once again that he is "satisfied with the prosecutors," confirming, from the perspective of "the head of the system," that he agrees with their actions.
It is also corruption when public resources are wasted and innocent people are investigated just to respond to political orders.
