The lack of reaction from the president, the pressure he puts on the parliamentary parties, asking them to provide him with a majority, even though none have it, has created a stalemate that Nicușor Dan cannot resolve.
But the current crisis, besides having no way out other than through parliamentary elections, whether they take place sooner or at the scheduled time, has done something else, it has simply devoured the mandate of the President of Romania.
Nicusor Dan considered that the dismissal of the government and the chaos that followed, caused by PSD, happened early enough and that, in the conditions where the presidential election is only in 2030, by then everything will be forgotten.
But in politics, as in real life, things do not work like that. When a marriage starts poorly, it is doomed, and sooner or later it falls apart.
Similarly in business. There is no room for a failed start. It may be harder, there may not be enough resources, the best employees may not be there, the product or service launched on the market may not be known, but if in the first month, for example, no customers enter the restaurant, they will never come in. Everything needs to be changed from the ground up - menu, design, possibly location.
There have been presidents in the recent past of Romania who have reached the Cotroceni Palace and have been surprised by the realities of Romania, but none have been so stubborn, treated parties so personally, and above all, had so little political support in Parliament.
A president with insecurities
Instead of Nicușor Dan's first concern, after being elected, being the formation of a political alliance that would give him a certain authority over Parliament, he quarreled with Ilie Bolojan over the "economic vision," trying to find another prime minister, even though an important component of his victory in the elections was precisely the alliance with the PNL leader.
Some may have forgotten, but Nicușor Dan wanted to appoint Anca Dragu, the President of the National Bank of Moldova, as prime minister after the "VAT dispute" with Bolojan.
Even that controversy showed that the current president did not understand the vectors in society that ensured his victory over George Simion.
Today's Romania, as it is, with its good and bad aspects, also represents an effect of the decisions made by the Cotroceni Palace.
"I believe we have a president with insecurities," said Traian Băsescu, former President of Romania, in an interview given last week to TV station Digi 24, quoted by news.ro.
It must be said that this harsh characterization comes from a person who strongly supported him in the presidential campaign, using all the influence he had to help him defeat George Simion.
Regardless of anyone's opinion about Traian Băsescu, it will be difficult to find rational arguments to contradict him.
Through the epithet "insecure," Băsescu's talent to pinpoint the exact character trait that caused the disaster we see so far is presented in Nicușor Dan's attitude, the thirst for affirmation and recognition that dominates all his actions.
Just a delusion
No, Nicușor Dan will not succeed in saving his mandate and has minimal chances of winning a second one. Even Emil Constantinescu, a much more skilled political leader, did not succeed.
The current president, in terms of popularity and trust, is at the level where Klaus Iohannis was after eight years of being at the Cotroceni Palace, and from the moment of the public trust collapse, it has gone from bad to worse.
Compare Nicușor Dan's mandate with that of Traian Băsescu, who was not afraid of suspension and went all out in his "fight with the moguls."
He had public support, although in his second term, he destroyed the party that brought him to power, promoting Elena Udrea, a corrupt and unpopular politician.
There are many supporters of Nicușor Dan who try to find excuses for him, promoting the idea of a profound leader who plans his moves well in advance and has strategies for every situation.
But it is just a delusion coming from the respect of some people who voted for him. A president, a strong political leader needs, first and foremost, adaptability, to find quick solutions to the challenges and obstacles of reality.
Long-term strategies in politics are a disaster simply because they do not come to fruition. They are unilateral and full of question marks, without the possibility of testing and controlling events. The only political strategies that have a chance of success are those of dictators who have absolute control over society, but even those do not always work.
It must be remembered here the famous quote by Mike Tyson: "Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth." That's exactly how it is in politics. You can have the best strategy, but faced with events and immediate reality, everything changes.
In the upcoming period, negotiations for the formation of the government will start again, and Nicușor Dan will do what he knows best: not take any responsibility.
