Grindeanu, new attack on Bolojan: His concern is to appoint a deputy prime minister, not to defend the country's security

PSD’s interim president, Sorin Grindeanu, launches a new attack on Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, stating that his focus on appointing a deputy prime minister instead of clarifying the situation regarding the withdrawal of American troops shows a lack of responsibility in a critical moment.

The announcement of the withdrawal of some American troops from Romania „raises serious questions in a critical moment for regional security,” Sorin Grindeanu wrote in a Facebook post.

In his view, the lack of response from Romanian authorities represents "a regression in the relationship with the Strategic Partner" and generates concern among Romanians.

"It is unacceptable for the population to find out from the international press about a decision that directly affects national security, while the Romanian Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remain silent," said the social-democratic leader. Grindeanu added that the only explanations came from the Ministry of National Defense, but they "did not clarify the situation and did not offer the guarantee of a consistent protection of Romania's territory."

He emphasized that the Pentagon's decision was contested in the United States Congress, making it even more necessary for a clear response from the Government. "It is the duty of Romanian authorities to explain what is happening, what guarantees we have, and what steps will follow," Grindeanu stated.

PSD's interim president also criticized Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's lack of involvement, stating that "Romania's ambassador to Washington, Andrei Muraru, conveys the position of a part of the US Congress, while the prime minister has no message on this topic of major public interest."

"His only public concern these days has been the appointment of a person for the position of deputy prime minister, who, even though successful in civil society, deepens doubts in the relationship with the Strategic Partner," Grindeanu added.

"In this context, I urgently request an official briefing in Parliament from the prime minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Defense, who must present a concrete plan for ensuring deterrence and defense capabilities on the Eastern Flank. Romania's security and that of Romanians cannot be treated superficially and with political amateurism," Grindeanu concluded.

President Nicușor Dan signed the appointment decree for Oana Gheorghiu as Deputy Prime Minister on Wednesday, despite PSD's requests to reject this nomination.
