President Nicușor Dan stated on Thursday that he will designate the future prime minister in the „coming days.”
„In the coming days, I will designate. Obviously, society expects us to have a government,” Nicușor Dan said as he left the CSM headquarters, in his first visit since taking over the presidency of Romania over a year ago.
The head of state specified that there have been discussions throughout this period.
"There have been discussions throughout this period. I haven't acted too much because many parliamentarians were on vacation, and as you know, a physical vote was required. But it's time to settle the issue," the president further stated.
Romania, over 120 days without a Government with full powers
Romania entered the autumn of 2026 with an interim Government, lacking full powers. Over 120 days have passed since the dismissal of the government led by Ilie Bolojan, and negotiations for the formation of a new political majority have not yet led to the installation of a new cabinet.
The governmental crisis began on May 5, 2026, when the Bolojan Government was dismissed by a motion of no confidence voted by PSD and AUR.
President Nicușor Dan then started consultations with the parties to identify a formula that could obtain the necessary majority in Parliament.
The first attempt to form a new cabinet was linked to the nomination of Eugen Tomac at the beginning of June. The formula failed to garner the necessary political support, and his mandate was withdrawn on June 14.
Subsequently, the president designated Adrian Veștea (PNL), but the government proposed by him was rejected by Parliament, obtaining 189 votes "for," compared to the required 233.
The deadlock continued throughout the summer. At the end of August, the president announced that new consultations were to follow and admitted that there was not enough support at that time for a technocrat government. According to the head of state, a formula with political ministers was more likely.
