Members of USR with criminal convictions in the first instance will be excluded. Lasconi: A step back from the first verdict

USR voted, on Friday, in the National Bureau meeting, at the proposal of the party’s president, Elena Lasconi, a resolution that establishes that any USR member who is criminally convicted for an intentional offense in the first instance will be expelled from the party if they do not resign from USR and any public office.

The proposal of the USR president was unanimously voted by the National Bureau.

Up to this moment, the USR statute, similar to the legislative initiative "No Convicted Felons in Public Office", provided that only after a final criminal conviction would a USR member lose their party membership and public office.

"I proposed this change in approach to integrity to the party, and I am glad that all my colleagues voted for it, because it seemed fair to me. A step back from the first verdict. Obviously, in cases where the final verdict is different, the person can return without issues."

"I am a sitting mayor, constantly harassed with complaints, I know how easy it is to end up in court actions, but a verdict is a verdict. USR is the only party in Romania that offers an honest alternative to the current government, which, after 35 years since the Revolution, can truly reform the country," stated Elena Lasconi, USR president.

The decision was voted by all 24 members of the National Bureau and by the USR president and applies from the moment of the vote, USR specifies.
