Former coach of Simona Halep, double Grand Slam champion, Patrick Mouratoglou announced a last-minute collaboration for him in the women’s world circuit.
After coaching Serena Williams for many years, with whom he won 10 Grand Slam titles, and after parting ways this summer with the Dane Holger Rune, the Frenchman chose to coach the 26-year-old Japanese player, Naomi Osaka, former WTA world leader, who recently gave birth and is in a position to want to relaunch her career.
Osaka parted ways with another former coach of Simona, namely the Belgian Wim Fissette, after being quickly eliminated at the US Open, in the second round, by Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic. The former world number 1, Osaka, currently ranks 75th in the WTA rankings, but hopes to quickly return to the top alongside Mouratoglou. The two have collaborated between 2019 and 2022.
"I think it's the best news for women's tennis. Now we have Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka. I'm not saying there aren't others, because, of course, there are many other players, but I think these two are extremely interesting. They are superstars, so they are great for the WTA. WTA needs superstars.
We had so many extraordinary years with Serena, Venus, and Maria Sharapova, who are three huge superstars, and I think it attracts a lot of attention to women's tennis when you have such players. So I'm very excited that Naomi is coming back. I think it's great. I think she can succeed. I feel she is very motivated to come back," Mouratoglou declared, according to sportskeeda.com.
Naomi Osaka has won four Grand Slam tournaments in her career: Australian Open (2019, 2021), US Open (2018 and 2020). Two of them, under the watchful eye of Wim Fissette: US Open 2020 and Australian Open 2021.
