Benfica Lisbon’s coach, Jose Mourinho, confirmed on Saturday that there were discussions between his agent, Jorge Mendes, and Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Perez, as well as with representatives of the Madrid club, according to EFE.
After the last match in the Portuguese league, in which Benfica won away at Estoril (3-1), Mourinho stated on Sport TV that there are discussions, but nothing concrete for now: „Obviously, something is happening. But there is no contract, no discussion between Real Madrid’s president and myself. From Real Madrid’s side, I have nothing (…). The only thing with Real Madrid is the conversations between Jorge (Mendes) and the president (Perez) and the board of directors.”
However, Mourinho mentioned that there is a "99% chance of staying at Benfica" because he has a contract with the Lisbon club and an offer for renewal, which he says he has not yet seen.
"I haven't signed with Real Madrid, I don't have a contract with Real Madrid, I don't have an offer. I have nothing. The only thing I have, and I won't deny it, is that my agent spoke to me, not Real Madrid, and told me: 'Look, there could be a real and serious situation with Real Madrid, let's wait and see.' Well, let's wait and see," explained the Portuguese coach.
Mourinho signed a contract with Benfica last September, valid until 2027, but which includes a ten-day period after the end of the current season for both parties to evaluate if they wish to continue the relationship.
Benfica, although undefeated this season, finished 3rd in the Primeira Liga with 80 points, behind FC Porto with 88 points and Sporting Lisbon with 82 points, and will play in the Europa League next season.
FC Porto mathematically secured their 31st title in Portugal two rounds ago. The "Dragons" consolidate their second position in the championship title standings, after Benfica (38).
