US and Iran agree to two-week ceasefire

US and Iran agree to two-week ceasefire

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on Tuesday that he has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran.

Trump said that the ceasefire agreement was conditioned on Iran’s acceptance of reopening the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, as reported by CNN.

The National Security Council of Iran speaks of "a great victory" and announces that its army will coordinate the transit through the Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire. According to the Pakistani Prime Minister, the ceasefire also includes Lebanon.

"Based on discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, and following their request to postpone the destructive force that was to be launched tonight against Iran, and on the condition that the Islamic Republic of Iran accepts the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombings and attacks on Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a ceasefire from both sides!," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"The reason is that we have already achieved and surpassed all military objectives and we are very close to a final agreement on LONG-TERM PEACE with Iran and PEACE in the Middle East," Trump further wrote.

"We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran and we believe it represents a viable basis for negotiations. Almost all points of contention from the past have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but the two-week period will allow for the finalization and conclusion of the agreement.

"On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the countries of the Middle East, it is an honor that this long-standing issue is close to resolution," he added.

Announcement of Iran's Supreme National Security Council

The Supreme National Security Council of Iran has issued a statement specifying that Iran's 10-point plan "emphasizes fundamental issues," such as "regulated transit through the Strait of Hormuz, under the coordination of the Iranian Armed Forces."

This measure would grant Iran "a unique economic and geopolitical status," the statement says.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Aragachi, stated that during the two weeks, safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz "will be possible in coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces and considering technical limitations."

Aragachi also expressed gratitude to the Pakistani Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, and to the Chief of the Pakistani Army, Asim Munir, for urging Trump to implement a ceasefire.

Iran claims to have achieved a great victory and forced the United States to accept its 10-point plan, according to a statement from Iran's Supreme National Security Council, cited by Iranian state media, as reported by CNN, which later clarified that it obtained this statement from Iranian officials and that it was picked up by several state media institutions in Iran.

As part of the plan, the US has agreed in principle to lift all primary and secondary sanctions against Iran and withdraw American combat forces from all bases in the region, the council stated.

Additionally, the US has agreed to accept Iran's nuclear enrichment and recognize its continued control over the Strait of Hormuz, according to the same sources. Controlled transit through this maritime route is set to take place "in coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces," the statement further notes.

Uncertainties Regarding Lebanon

The ceasefire agreed upon by the United States and Iran also includes Lebanon, stated Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who presented the plan to American President Donald Trump.

"I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere, including in Lebanon and other areas, WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT," Sharif said in a statement.

However, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement welcoming the ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran, while emphasizing that it does not cover Lebanon. "The two-week ceasefire does not include Lebanon," the statement reads.
