Nicușor Dan announces state intervention in the fuel market: measures within a week

President Nicușor Dan announced on Thursday, from Brussels, that the Government will implement measures following the recent increase in fuel prices, without detailing their content.

The head of state indicated that the decision comes after several scenarios were analyzed at the governmental level and within the Supreme Council for Country’s Defense (CSAT), in a context where energy costs remain a major concern for the economy.

Measures in preparation after consultations with the industry

Nicușor Dan explained that authorities have already worked on several intervention options, and in recent days, direct discussions have taken place with market players.

"Both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Energy have come up with various scenarios. In the meantime, discussions have also taken place at the Government level, between the Government and the operators in the energy market, and you will see in the coming days, within a week, I estimate, a set of measures. (...) You will see the measures when they are adopted, but it will be an action on the part of the Romanian state," the president stated.

The message suggests a direct intervention by the state in the market, but without concrete details regarding the form of these measures or their impact on consumers and companies.

Energy, a priority at the European level

Present in Brussels for the European Council meeting, the president emphasized that the energy topic is one of Romania's main concerns in discussions at the European Union level.

He pointed out that Romania is part of a group of states that are seeking to temper energy costs, especially for the industry.

"Out of all the subjects on the table, the subject that interests us the most is energy. We are in a group of states that are following and pressing for a slowdown in the energy sector, so that energy prices for companies in Europe - including those in Romania - and large energy-consuming industries do not suffer," said Nicușor Dan.

Romania relies on nuclear energy

In the same context, the head of state reiterated Romania's position in favor of nuclear energy, considered essential for price stability and energy security.

"There is also a debate regarding nuclear power, and we are among the main supporters of nuclear energy, of directing and stimulating nuclear production within the Union," the president conveyed.
