The head of the College of Physicians: We know nothing about medical school graduates, we don't know where they are

The President of the College of Physicians in Romania, Daniel Coriu, states that the approximately 3,800 young people graduating from medical schools in Romania each year are not found in the College of Physicians, and it is also unknown where they practice.

Coriu explained the situation of doctors who have requested the issuance of a current professional certificate that would allow them to practice abroad.

"Starting in 2016, before the salary increase, there were about 1,500 per year (doctors requesting certificates to leave the country - editor's note).

After the salary increase, from 2017, they gradually started to decrease.

During the pandemic, in 2020-2021, they reached 700, then in 2022, it started to slightly increase, reaching about a thousand, last year there were around 830 such certificates.

It's only about intention, we don't know if these people have left, they requested the certificate, we don't know if the process has been completed," said Coriu on Thursday evening on Medika Tv.

He specifies, however, that the over 3,000 young people graduating from medical faculties in Romania are not found in the domestic healthcare system after completing their studies.

"On the other hand, we know nothing about the graduates because medical school graduates - and we're talking about around 3,800 including foreign students, it's true - we don't know where they are, but in any case, we don't find them in the College. If we were to increase the number by 3,000 per year, we would quickly fill the deficit. This is not happening," adds Daniel Coriu.
