The Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (JURI) voted on Thursday to lift the parliamentary immunity of Diana Șoșoacă.
The report was approved with 17 votes in favor, one abstention, and no votes against, as reported by Digi 24.
The JURI meeting was held behind closed doors, and on the agenda was also the request for the lifting of immunity for the Romanian Diana Șoșoacă.
The Committee's report will be sent to the European Parliament plenary in the upcoming plenary session for the final vote. Most likely, it will be discussed next week.
The General Prosecutor's Office requested, on September 23, 2025, the European Parliament to lift the immunity for Diana Șoșoacă, who is accused of various crimes, including Legionary propaganda.
According to prosecutors, Diana Șoșoacă is being investigated for:
- 4 offenses of unlawful deprivation of liberty (meaning she would have detained individuals against their will, in the case of Italian journalists);
- 4 offenses of public promotion of the cult of persons convicted of genocide against humanity and war crimes, as well as promoting fascist, legionary, racist, or xenophobic ideas, concepts, or doctrines in public
- public promotion of anti-Semitic ideas, concepts, or doctrines in any way
- denial, questioning, approval, justification, or minimization in an obvious manner, by any means, in public, of the Holocaust or its effects
- outrage (meaning for assaulting or insulting a public official in the performance of their duties).
If she loses her immunity, Diana Șoșoacă can be investigated in Romania for the mentioned offenses.
