Austria Deploys Eurofighter Jets After Unauthorized U.S. Aircraft Enter Airspace

Twice within two days, the Austrian air forces scrambled fighter jets after American military aircraft were detected flying without valid overflight authorizations in Austrian airspace, according to the German publication Die Welt.

Austrian army spokesperson Michael Bauer made the incident public on the X platform.

According to reports, on Sunday, two PC12 aircraft, used by the US military under the designation U-28A, flew without authorization in the Totes Gebirge region of Upper Austria.

After being intercepted by Austrian Eurofighter jets, the aircraft reportedly turned back and later returned to Munich.

The incident repeated on Monday. Once again, two PC12 aircraft were detected in Austrian airspace, prompting Austrian Eurofighter jets to be scrambled for identification.

It is not yet clear if the aircraft had the necessary authorizations this time, unlike the Sunday incident when the lack of approvals was confirmed.

The Austrian military has not yet specified the consequences of the incidents.

According to the Swiss publication "20 Minuten," Michael Bauer stated that the situation will be resolved through diplomatic channels.

The PC12 aircraft are primarily used by Americans as reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft. Manufactured by the Swiss company Pilatus, these aircraft are also used by the US Air Force Special Operations Command. In rare cases, they also serve as mobile communication relays or transport aircraft.

Austria is not a NATO member state and maintains its status of permanent military neutrality, as provided for in the Constitution.
