The National Agency for Fiscal Administration (ANAF) collected record revenues for the state budget in April and exceeded the set target. It is the first month of 2026 in which the Tax Authority had an official collection plan, following the late approval of the state budget, only in March.
According to data cited by Profit.ro, the collection target for April was 56 billion lei, and ANAF would have collected approximately 1.6 billion lei more, thus setting a new monthly record.
The publication notes that the result is important for the evolution of the budget deficit, especially as Romania is under pressure from investors, rating agencies, and the European Commission to reduce fiscal imbalances.
April, the first month with real pressure on the budget
The first three months of the year were influenced by the fact that the budget for 2026 was adopted only in March, temporarily limiting certain public expenditures.
However, in April, these restrictions no longer applied, and the state began to pay some expenses that had been postponed from the early months of the year. For this reason, April was considered a month with high pressure on the budget deficit.
In this context, a collection exceeding expectations from ANAF could help the Government to keep the deficit closer to the target assumed for 2026.
Increased taxes and ANAF inspections have brought in more money
According to the cited source, the revenue increase was supported both by the tax increases introduced by the Government last summer and by the efficiency measures adopted at the level of the Tax Authority.
ANAF has started to carry out more targeted inspections, based on risk analyses, identifying significant damages and companies that had accumulated large debts to the budget without previously attracting enough attention from tax inspectors.
