Tesla is preparing to produce thousands of humanoid robots named Optimus this year.
Elon Musk announced that the factory in Fremont has already started production, with a target of 10,000–12,000 units by 2025.
However, even reaching the threshold of 5,000 robots would be a success, and Musk compares this initial production of humanoid robots to a "Roman legion."
Tesla Produces Thousands of Optimus
Tesla announced the Optimus robot back in 2021. At that time, the company only had a demonstrative model and a person dressed in a suit to illustrate how the robot could look, as reported by teslarati.com.
In 2022, Tesla had already developed a functional prototype. Optimus's progress was rapid, with several dozen humanoid robots interacting with attendees at the October 2024 Cybercab presentation.
Musk states that Optimus could become the most significant product in history, with a scale ten times larger than the company's next biggest product.
Musk announced that the first humanoid robot had already been manufactured at the Fremont plant.
Musk's Plan for 2025: "a Legion" of Robots
Recently, Musk explained that Tesla aims to produce between 10,000 and 12,000 humanoid robots this year. However, considering that Optimus is a completely new product, even achieving half of this goal would be a huge success for the company.
"So, this year, we hope to produce approximately 5,000 Optimus robots. Theoretically, our target is to have enough parts to produce 10,000, maybe even 12,000, but being a completely new product, with all brand-new components, I would consider it a success if we reach half of those 10,000.
But even 5,000 robots represent the size of a Roman legion, which, honestly, is a bit scary.
"An entire legion of robots... I'd say 'wow.' But I think we will actually build a legion, at least one, this year, and probably 10 legions next year. So, there will probably be around 50,000 next year,” Musk stated.
