Mobile phones could be banned entirely in schools, including during breaks

Mobile phones could be completely banned in schools, including during breaks. A bill submitted to the Chamber of Deputies provides for stricter rules regarding the use of electronic devices by students and the possibility of temporary confiscation if the ban is not respected.

The initiators argue that the measure could reduce distractions during classes and encourage socializing among children, as reported by Digi24.

Schools should set up spaces for storing phones

Schools are expected to be required to organize special spaces where students can leave their phones and other electronic devices before classes start.

If rules are violated, devices could be temporarily confiscated.

The project initiators believe that removing phones from schools could help students pay more attention during classes and interact more with each other.

Some students quoted by Digi24 say that such a measure could help them communicate more with their peers and be less distracted during lessons.

Psychologist Lidia Bârsanu states that limiting access to electronic devices can have beneficial effects on children's social development.

"Restricting these devices does nothing but teach the child to relate to others, develop empathy, and so on, automatically fostering a sense of belonging to a group. Those who are restricted may initially experience mild anxiety, frustration," she said.

Parents hesitant about total ban

However, there are parents who oppose a complete ban and believe that students should be allowed to have phones with them, especially during breaks, to be able to communicate quickly with their families.

"Surprisingly, there were parents who were extremely reluctant to this solution of banning phones because, although they agree that they should not be used during classes, parents really want to have their phones with them during breaks and at school," said Cristina Goanță, director of the "Tudor Vladimirescu" National College.

In addition to the ban on mobile phones, the bill also provides for the expansion of video surveillance systems in educational institutions and the introduction of mandatory psychological counseling for students.
