Romania set for €1bn Chinese investment in Europe’s biggest hybrid energy project

The Chinese industrial conglomerate Sany Group is expanding its presence in Romania and will invest over 1 billion euros in a large-scale hybrid energy project.

The memorandum has already been signed with the Romanian partner Danube Solar Seven SRL, owned by Mugurel Surupăceanu, former deputy and prefect of Gorj, according to documents analyzed by Profit.ro.

The project, named TIMIS SANY, will be implemented in Timiș county, with two 800 MWp solar parks in Uivar, an energy storage system of 2.34 GWh, and a 70 MW data center in Timișoara, located on the European data highway to Frankfurt.

Investments in photovoltaic parks are estimated at 320 million euros, in storage at 350 million, and in the data center also at 350 million euros.

Sany Group will provide the basic equipment, including solar panels produced at its factory in Hunan, and will fully finance the project.

The Chinese group has experience in Romania, collaborating with Surupăceanu on two renewable energy projects in Dobresti, Dolj, which include a 95 MWp photovoltaic park and a 218 MWh storage system, with works set to begin at the end of this month.

Sany Group, the world's third-largest producer of heavy industrial machinery, has a photovoltaic module division and reported a turnover of 11.7 billion dollars in 2025 and over 25,000 employees globally.
