Romania will purchase 58 new electric trains. The investment of 3.3 billion lei from European funds is subject to approval at Wednesday’s Government meeting.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu before the Executive meeting.

"Therefore, we approve a major investment project that connects major urban centers through modern rail transport. We are buying 58 new electric trains, an investment of 3.3 billion lei from European funds," explained the Prime Minister.

According to him, the new trains will connect 13 major cities in Romania.

"13 county seat municipalities will be interconnected, including Brașov, Craiova, Brăila, Galați, Bacău, Focșani, Arad, Deva, Alba Iulia, Cluj-Napoca, and Oradea," specified Marcel Ciolacu.

It is worth mentioning that Romania has signed a contract with the company Alstom for the acquisition of 37 electric trains. The first one arrived in Romania but went into repairs after being attacked with stones by locals near Periș on its way back from the Făurei Testing Center.

The other 36 trains from the batch purchased by the Romanian state from the French manufacturer are expected to arrive in the country next year.
