Romania had the only referee Istvan Kovacs at this EURO 2024, and the best referee of the moment was in the center in only two matches, both from the group stage.
Kovacs, 39 years old, born in Carei, will no longer referee at EURO 2024. He was sent home by UEFA on the last day of the quarterfinals, after it was considered that he had an extremely poor performance in the Czech Republic – Turkey match, in which he showed no less than 20 cards, 18 yellow and two red, an all-time record of the European Championships.
UEFA considered that Istvan Kovacs lost control of that match and did not trust the Romanian to let him referee in the final stages of EURO, writes Golazo.
In addition to the aforementioned match between the Czech Republic and Turkey, Kovacs also refereed Slovenia - Serbia 1-1. He is a highly rated top referee at UEFA, officiating this year's Europa League final between Atalanta and Leverkusen, with a score of 3-0. Two seasons ago, he was also in the center for the Conference League final, won by Roma against Feyenoord, with a score of 1-0.
