The Netherlands defeated Poland 2-1, despite being behind 1-0, at the start of Group D at EURO 2024, in the first match of Sunday at the European Football Championship in Germany.
The goals were scored by Gakpo and Weghorst for the Dutch, while the Poles opened the scoring with a header by Adam Buksa.
The first part of the Poland - Netherlands match did not disappoint either, remaining in the same sphere of the spectacular games so far at EURO 2024, with many goals, many records broken, game after game, goal after goal.
Poland had not beaten the Netherlands since 1979, from a match in the qualifiers for Euro 1980, and the Netherlands had 6 direct victories against the white-reds, who today played without the exponent Lewandowski.
Even without the Barcelona star on the field, Poland still opened the scoring, although the Netherlands had completely dominated the match, missing chances after chances, especially through Depay or Gakpo. Forward Adam Buksa perfectly headed the ball into the net in the 16th minute, the top scorer of Antalyaspor being Lewa's replacement today.
However, the equalizer came quickly, and obviously in the course of the game, because the Netherlands continued to insist and bring danger to Wojciech Szczesny's goal. It was a deflected long-range shot, signed by Gakpo, Liverpool's star, which made the change on the scoreboard possible.
But, as it happened last night when the team that opened the scoring was to lose, we are talking here about Albania, and here the Netherlands eventually turned the fate of the game, with a goal scored in the 80th minute, after Ronald Koeman had a great inspiration, and instead of Gakpo and Depay, he introduced Weghorst and Frimpong.
Weghorst, Hoffenheim's striker, took a shot from close range at his first attempt and first touch of the ball, from Ake's inspired pass. 2-1 and the Netherlands maintained the score, earning three important points in a tough group, which also includes Austria and France, who will play tomorrow at 22.
