The President of the European People’s Party (EPP), Manfred Weber, sent a strong message of support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who has achieved results in all EPP priorities.
"I had an excellent phone conversation with Ilie Bolojan, the Prime Minister of Romania. I congratulated him for the concrete results achieved in such a short period of time. He has taken measures to reduce the deficit, stabilize the economy, and promote essential reforms.
He has developed a responsible budget, supported by strategic investments, especially through European funds and the Recovery Fund," wrote Manfred Weber on Facebook on Wednesday.
He announces that he has evaluated, together with Bolojan, the priorities for the near future, both at the European and national levels.
"In these difficult times globally, marked by the war in Ukraine, energy pressures, and the rise of extremism across Europe, it is essential for us, as the EPP family - the European People's Party, to set an example.
Responsible governance means putting citizens first and making necessary decisions: reducing excessive spending, cutting bureaucracy, promoting reforms, and modernizing public institutions, always with full respect for taxpayers' money," the President of the European People's Party further conveyed.
Manfred Weber states that "only such responsible leadership will ensure that governments can protect and support citizens in times of crisis, whether facing energy pressures, security threats, or economic uncertainty, as is currently the case throughout Europe."
"Prime Minister Bolojan has been one of the European leaders who has achieved results in all EPP priorities. Therefore, I welcome the courage and determination of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan to continue his mandate at the helm of the government, from a strong sense of responsibility towards citizens and the country, and to continue on the path of reforms and modernization that he started 10 months ago," added Manfred Weber.
According to him, Prime Minister Bolojan "enjoys full support from European partners to strengthen Romania and continue to lead the country in a responsible manner, as he has done so far."
PSD has drifted away from pro-European commitments
"Unfortunately, we see that the Social Democratic Party of Romania has drifted away from its pro-European commitments. It now opposes even the measures agreed within the governing coalition: strengthening the Romanian economy and increasing its resilience for the benefit of the population, while also jeopardizing the much-needed legislative reform package for financing under the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (RRM)," Weber stated.
He warns that "depriving Romania of billions of euros from EU funds due to populist reasoning would be a major blow to Romania's democracy and stability."
"Despite these emerging political challenges, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has chosen the more difficult - but correct - path: ensuring governance stability and the ability to implement necessary reforms, while keeping Romania on a stable trajectory in this extremely delicate geopolitical context," the leader of the European People's Party further stated.
Ilie Bolojan announced that he will not resign and is seeking support for the functioning of the Government, after the PSD withdrew its political support and is expected to withdraw its ministers from the Executive.
