The first heatwave red code of this summer

The heatwave is intensifying, and on Sunday Romania has its first red code of the summer, valid in three counties in the southwest of the country.

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued a red code heatwave warning for the counties of Mehedinți, Dolj, and Olt.

However, it will be extremely hot throughout the country this weekend, with several yellow and orange code warnings in effect.

Let's take them one by one:

The orange code for Saturday is valid from 10 a.m. until Sunday at 10 a.m. and will affect the counties of Mehedinți, Gorj, Vâlcea, Dolj, Olt, and Teleorman.

The maximum temperatures will range between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius, and the minimums will not drop below 20 degrees, characterizing a tropical night.

During the same time interval, we also have a yellow code in most of Muntenia, locally in Transylvania, in the southern part of Banat, and in continental Dobrogea. Here, maximum temperatures will range between 33 and 37 degrees, and minimum temperatures generally between 15 and 20 degrees.

Rain and storms in the mountains

We also have a yellow code for storms in the mountains. It is valid on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. In the Southern Carpathians, there will be periods of accentuated atmospheric instability manifested by torrential rains, lightning, wind intensifications (gusts of 50...70 km/h), and isolated hail. In short intervals or through accumulation, rainfall amounts will be 20...30 mm and isolated up to 40 mm.

Episodes of atmospheric instability will also occur today isolated in the southern part of the country, and on Sunday in the Southern Carpathians, Curbură, and adjacent foothill areas.

First red heatwave code of 2025

Sunday will be extremely hot.

The counties of Mehedinți, Dolj, and Olt are targeted by the red heatwave code, starting from 10 a.m. until Monday at 10 a.m.

Maximum temperatures of 39...41 degrees Celsius will be recorded in the shade. The thermal minimums will be 21...24 degrees.
