Social media network Facebook is experiencing major malfunctions in the US and Europe. Users in Romania also lost access to Facebook on Friday afternoon.

Facebook and Instagram are facing a major and simultaneous outage on Friday, with users from the US, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East reporting sudden disconnections, empty feeds, and repeated error messages such as „unexpected error” or „query error.”

The outage seems to affect Facebook's main site, the mobile app, Messenger, and segments of Instagram's feed and authentication systems, as reported by Newsweek.

UPDATE - Access to Facebook in Romania was partially restored around 5:25 PM. Some users report issues accessing the platform or slow content loading.

Issues in Romania

In Romania, technical issues first appeared on Messenger. Shortly after, the entire social network went down.

The first reports of malfunctions were recorded on the DownDetector platform at 4:36 PM.

When trying to access Facebook, users receive the following error message:

"Sorry, something went wrong. We're working on it and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can."

WhatsApp also experienced issues, with the messaging platform only accessible in Romania on mobile devices. Access from PCs and laptops was restored after about 20 minutes.

What We Know About the Cause of the Incidents

The cause of the technical problems is not clear at the moment.

Company representatives have not yet provided explanations regarding the cause of the service interruption.

Service disruption tracking tools show sharp increases for Facebook and Instagram, and user issues vary - some cannot access the main page, while others are repeatedly told that their passwords are incorrect.

As the issue is at the server level, changing devices or using a VPN does not restore access, according to Newsweek.
