The Romanian Government is set to conclude a memorandum of understanding with Mastercard for the development of a national digital identity wallet, interoperable at the European level.
The project is expected to be implemented by December and is part of the efforts to align with the European Union legislative framework regarding digital identity.
What the digital wallet will allow
According to the Executive, the solution will enable citizens to store and use digital documents issued by authorities or other trusted entities. These include university diplomas, health cards, driver’s licenses, professional certifications, or even transport tickets. The aim is to simplify access to public and private services in a secure and user-friendly system.
The digital wallet developed in Romania will be compatible with similar solutions in other member states, allowing the use of digital documents outside the country. This initiative is part of the broader European Union project to create a single digital identity for citizens.
The state retains control without budgetary costs
Authorities emphasize that the Romanian state will remain the owner and administrator of the system, while Mastercard will serve as a provider of technological services. The partnership is one of technical cooperation and does not involve costs for the public budget.
The agreement between the Government and the company will span over a period of five years and will include four main pillars of development. For each of these, the Executive will designate responsible individuals at the ministerial level, who will coordinate the implementation and operation of the system.
