Thousands of Danes have signed an online petition to buy California from the USA, in an ironic response to the interest shown by American President Donald Trump in purchasing Greenland.
The page named Denmarkification (which can be translated as „Danemarkization” – ed.) has already managed to gather nearly 200,000 signatures, reports EFE.
The petition argues that the acquisition would be a good option for Danes due to the fact that the state of California is known for its huge avocado production, achievements in technology, with the possibility of renaming the famous amusement park Disneyland as Hans Christian Andersenland, in honor of the Danish fairy tale author.
"Have you ever looked at a map and thought: 'What does Denmark need? More sun, palm trees, and roller skates'. Well, we have a unique opportunity in life to make this dream come true. Let's buy California from Donald Trump!" is written on this page.
The same page mentions the intention to restore the greatness of California, "Måke Califørnia Great Ægain," a reference to the popular slogan used by Trump "Make America Great Again."
In recent weeks, Trump has reiterated on several occasions the need to gain control over Greenland, an autonomous island that the American president wants to buy from Denmark.
However, the authorities of this country have repeatedly assured that Greenland is not for sale and have even described the White House tenant's intention as "absurd."
The Denmarkification page also refers to Trump's relationship with California, a state he has never managed to win over.
"Let's be honest: Trump is not exactly the biggest supporter of California. He called it "the most bankrupt state in the Union" and has been at odds with its leaders for years. We are sure he would be willing to part with it for the right price," is also written on the site.
At the bottom of the page, a warning is published: "This campaign is 100% real... in our dreams."
