A ship sank on Saturday morning in the Black Sea, 26 nautical miles off Sfântu Gheorghe.
Eight crew members were rescued, with three reported missing.
The search and rescue operation, coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre of the Romanian Naval Authority, is currently ongoing after the sinking of the Mohammad Z vessel.
The alert was received around 4:00 am, and immediately the ARSVOM, SAR Artemis, and SAR Apollo vessels were dispatched to the area.
"Support was also requested from the Border Police, which sent the MAI 2110 and MAI 1106 vessels to the accident site. Additionally, two nearby commercial vessels were promptly alerted to join the search and rescue operation for human lives," announced representatives of the Romanian Naval Authority.
They specified that the sunken ship, Mohammed Z, under the Tanzanian flag, had 11 crew members on board, nine Syrian citizens, and two Egyptians, with eight of them being rescued by the commercial vessel Michel, which was closest to the accident site.
"Efforts are currently underway to search for the other three missing crew members, all of Syrian nationality,"
The reason for the ship sinking is unknown at this time, and an investigation will be opened to determine the causes and circumstances of the accident," the source added.
