A new Siemens factory, digitalized, based on artificial intelligence, and carbon-neutral, will be built in Sibiu by 2028.
The factory will mainly produce various types of switches and electronic circuit protection devices.
"Siemens plans to build a new digital factory from scratch in the western industrial area of the city of Sibiu. The planned investment, worth several tens of millions of euros, targets a distinct Siemens business unit, with a specific product portfolio and its own operational footprint and is not related to other production activities."
This investment reflects a long-term industrial strategy aimed at specific market segments," according to a company statement.
Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2026, with completion expected by 2028, after obtaining all necessary authorizations and approvals.
The new factory will have an area of approximately 14,500 m² and will be developed in partnership with WDP, under a long-term lease contract.
"Before construction, the production area is expected to be virtually designed using Siemens Digital Twin technology - allowing for precise simulation and optimization of equipment layouts, workflows, and production processes to determine the best possible configuration," the company specifies.
The portfolio available in the new factory will include the SENTRON low-voltage product range, designed for protection, switching, measuring, and monitoring (such as miniature circuit breakers, differential circuit breakers, differential circuit breakers with overcurrent protection, and electronic circuit protection devices), for industrial and residential use.
Siemens plans for highly flexible production, where artificial intelligence will play an increasingly important role.
"The focus will be on seamless data interconnection and intelligent control, from raw material supply, through assembly and testing, to final delivery. Automatically guided vehicles (AGVs) will transport materials to production lines completely autonomously. Automation and robotics integration are also part of the strategy," according to the statement.
In addition to increasing efficiency, Siemens also expects increased flexibility, allowing for quick responses to changing conditions and meeting future customer requirements.
The factory is designed to operate on a carbon-neutral basis, with integrated energy efficiency in all manufacturing processes.
It is anticipated that skylights equipped with tubular daylighting devices will be installed to channel direct sunlight into the production area through tubes with high reflectivity, reducing dependence on artificial lighting.
Upon completion, a photovoltaic system is planned to be installed on the roof, with on-site solar energy being used directly, and the remaining electrical energy being purchased from sustainable suppliers.
