A surgeon left a compress in a patient, who later died

A doctor from the Oncology Institute in Bucharest is being questioned on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Dâmboviţa Police in a case of manslaughter.

The doctor is suspected of leaving a compress in a patient he operated on, with the woman dying as a result of sepsis.

"From the investigations carried out, it was established that on December 5, 2022, the suspect, while performing a surgical procedure in the abdominal area, allegedly forgot a compress which led to the development of sepsis and, subsequently, to the death of the patient, a 73-year-old woman from Dragomireşti.

In the case, the police are continuing the investigations, under the coordination of the prosecutor in charge," inform officials from the Dâmboviţa Police.

Judicial sources have told News.ro that the doctor targeted by the investigation of the Dâmboviţa police works at the Oncology Institute in the Capital and performed a surgery for cancer in the abdominal area of the woman from Dâmboviţa county. She died at the beginning of 2023.

Wednesday morning, the police carried out searches, one at the hospital where the surgical procedure was performed and another at the doctor's residence in the town of Voluntari.

Following the searches, the police discovered and seized several documents and a mobile phone.

The surgeon suspected in this case is 69 years old.
