Former judge Andrea Chiș says she has accepted to be proposed for the position of Minister of Justice in the Government prepared by Siegfried Mureșan. She claims that the designated prime minister called her on Thursday and told her that PNL, USR, and UDMR had agreed on her name.
„My nomination is therefore the result of an agreement. It does not come solely from a certain party or a minority that represents half of me, referring to my mother tongue. It’s a pleasant feeling to know that you come from agreement, not from conflict,” Chiș wrote in a post on Facebook.
The statement comes after PNL established its ministerial proposals, and for Justice, the solution of an independent was put forward. The portfolio was one of the disputed points in the negotiations between the three parties.
Chiș says that the proposal surprised her. Lately, she has aimed to only accept projects she is invited to, she explains. She coordinates the Career, Professional Orientation, and Alumni Center of Babeș-Bolyai University and works on projects in the Republic of Moldova, especially with the National Institute of Justice.
"I accepted because we have talked a lot about the need for taking on the justice reform, and I have never shied away from taking on challenges. I have also done so by running for a position in the CSM," the former judge wrote.
Andrea Chiș reminds that the proposal must pass through the Parliament vote: "Parliament will have the final say, as is natural in our democratic society."
Siegfried Mureșan, designated candidate for the position of prime minister, is expected to seek the Parliament's vote of confidence next week for the government program and the complete Cabinet list.
Who is Andrea Chiș
Andrea Chiș has been a judge for almost three decades. She began her career in 1994 at the Cluj-Napoca Court, then worked at the Cluj Tribunal and the Cluj Court of Appeal. In 2017, she became an elected member of the Superior Council of Magistracy, a position she held until retiring in January 2023, according to her CV published by UBB.
She is a graduate of the Law Faculty of Babeș-Bolyai University, where she also obtained a doctoral degree in law. She taught civil procedural law at the same faculty, and in January 2026, she announced that she was ending her teaching activity there. Since 2024, she coordinates the Career, Professional Orientation, and Alumni Center of UBB.
She has also been a member of the Executive Council of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary. In the Republic of Moldova, she has been involved in projects related to justice reform. According to her CV, in 2024, she was part of the special preselection committee for candidates for the leadership of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.
According to G4Media, Andrea Chiș publicly criticized the issues in the judiciary and supported the abolition of the Special Section for Investigating Magistrates, which she called "a failure from the start."
