One of the national teams with a famous name at this World Cup has offered an unpleasant surprise through its performances, being eliminated prematurely, already after the group stage.
We are talking about the two-time world champion, in 1930 and 1950, Uruguay, which finished 3rd in its group H, alongside Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia, being eliminated, as it was ranked as the weakest 3rd place team among all groups at the World Cup, with only 2 points.
Marcelo Bielsa's team finished 3rd in Group H, after a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia, a 2-2 draw with Cape Verde, and a 0-1 loss to Spain. Following this failure, the Uruguayan Football Federation made a harsh decision, that of canceling the flight from Mexico (where the team had its training base), back to Montevideo. Thus, the technical staff and players had to find solutions on their own to book flights back to their homes, using various commercial flights, as reported by the Americans at YSS Scores.
The South Americans have also finished 4th twice at World Cups, in the 1954 and 2010 editions. It is the second consecutive time that Uruguay has failed to advance from the group stage at a World Cup, following a similar feat in Qatar 2022.
