Romanian tennis player Irina Begu, currently ranked 122nd in the WTA rankings, has decided to return to tennis over 7 months after her last official match.
The former Romanian number 1 player, born in Bucharest, now 33 years old, has entered a tournament at the base of the WTA circuit pyramid.
In great need of points but facing significant medical issues lately, Begu will push for a comeback in April at the WTA 125 tournament in La Bisbal (April 1-7), offering a total prize money of $115,000, in Spain. She played her last official match on August 29, 2023, at the US Open, losing in the first round: 3-6, 2-6 to Tamara Korpatsch (Germany).
Begu also reached 27th in the WTA rankings in 2023 and will be the 8th seed in the Iberian Peninsula, where the top seed will be Greet Minnen (Belgium, 81st WTA).
Irina Begu admitted a few years ago that she suffers from infectious mononucleosis, which is why she did not participate in the previous edition of the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.
