Who will lead the Government? Simion: "A Romanian who loves peace". Nicușor Dan: "I really want Mr. Bolojan"

During Thursday evening’s presidential candidates debate, George Simion and Nicușor Dan discussed their vision regarding the Government after Marcel Ciolacu resigned.

George Simion supports the eternal whim of a „government of national unity,” but does not disclose who will lead it, while Nicușor Dan desires a government supported by the four pro-Western parties, plus minorities, with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

"I wish for a government composed of the four pro-Western parties, plus national minorities.

I wish for this government to be led by a person who has proven to know how to implement reforms, meaning to cut expenses, a person who has proven to have a vision for development, I wish very much - no surprise - for Mr. Bolojan, only that I do not want to promise something that is not exclusively my decision," explained Nicușor Dan.

He emphasized that if elected president, he will "immediately" call for discussions with the pro-Western formations and will appoint a prime minister who will lead Romania "towards a culture of law, work, and prosperity."

On the other hand, George Simion this time refused to mention a future prime minister's name.

"I aim for a government of national unity to calm things down. There are many politicians who try to scare Romanians, to obtain votes through fear, lying to workers, lying to entrepreneurs, putting pressure on them.

We must stop this policy (sic!) that was very evident during the Covid period of governing through fear. We must return to peace, and that is precisely why I will nominate a Romanian, a person who loves peace, after we manage to return to constitutional attributes, democracy, and the will of the Romanian people.

I will not make a nomination, but a government of broad national majority to ensure Romania's exit from the overlapping crises it is facing," declared George Simion to Euronews.

Is it Georgescu or not?

It is worth noting that two days ago George Simion made contradictory statements about the future prime minister.

First, he refused to say that he would impose Călin Georgescu as prime minister, then stated that he nominates him and will go with him to snap elections.

Initially, Simion emphasized in an interview with Euronews that "Georgescu is not my prime minister, there is no way," perhaps he himself could be the prime minister of Călin Georgescu. "Călin Georgescu must be part of the leadership of this country. What the formula is, we will see," Simion adds.

Later, Simion made completely different statements about Georgescu on Digi24. Here he firmly stated that he will propose him as prime minister and threatened to dissolve Parliament. "I will propose Călin Georgescu and I expect 50%+1 of the parliamentarians to vote for a Georgescu government."

When asked if, if he becomes president, he plans to appoint Călin Georgescu to try to form a government, the AUR candidate says: "Yes. This is the commitment I made to Romanians. It is normal for me to do this if he wants it."

However, Simion does not exclude the possibility of snap elections.

"The Constitution says this: the president can nominate one person and then another, has 60 days from the date of the first nomination, after which he can dissolve Parliament. There are several options in progress. If Romanians accept this option, I will probably insist on going with Călin Georgescu to snap elections, but the probability is very low, because I expect to find 50 plus one of the number of parliamentarians." "It is a possibility. I would like to avoid, honestly, to tell you," he added.
