President Nicușor Dan has proposed Adrian Veștea for the position of prime minister, after the Tomac Government failed to gather a majority in Parliament.
The head of state explained his choice by highlighting Veștea's administrative background. Nicușor Dan stated that Veștea has gone through all levels of administration: he was a mayor, president of a county council, and a minister. The President also mentioned Veștea's experience in budget management and attracting European funds, citing the example of Brașov Airport.
Adrian Veștea is one of the most important leaders of the PNL and comes from local administration. He is 52 years old, born in Râșnov, and has served as mayor of the city, president of Brașov County Council, and Minister of Development, Public Works, and Administration.
Local media in Brașov reported as early as April that the liberal leader was prepared, within political negotiations, as a possible replacement for Ilie Bolojan.
Veștea was described as a close associate of Hubert Thuma, the president of PNL Ilfov, the fiercest opponent of Ilie Bolojan within the party. BizBrașov wrote that the Thuma faction had negotiated with the PSD for Bolojan's replacement and for the establishment of a new government formula involving PSD-PNL-UDMR.
In his first reaction after the President's announcement, Veștea stated that he takes responsibility in a moment of political crisis and emphasized that he comes "from the grassroots." He presented his political journey as one built gradually over nearly three decades of activity in the PNL: local councilor, mayor, president of a county council, and minister.
Reactions from the PNL, both from the party president, Ilie Bolojan, and from the first vice president, Ciprian Ciucu, indicate that the discussions and nomination were decided behind the leadership of the liberals, who were unaware of the announcement that Nicușor Dan would make until Sunday morning.
Adrian Veștea's name is mainly associated with Brașov and the Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport project. As president of Brașov County Council, Veștea supported the airport project, the first one built from scratch in Romania after 1989. Veștea frequently used the project as an example of administration delivering concrete investments.
In 2023, Veștea entered the Government as Minister of Development, Public Works, and Administration. He left the Government after the local elections to return to the leadership of Brașov County Council, a position he had previously held.
Veștea has also spoken in the past about the need for administrative reform. As a minister, he advocated for a more efficient administrative system, including the merging of some administrative-territorial units.
Politically, Adrian Veștea is a seasoned liberal. He was the president of PNL Brașov, and within the party, he also served as interim general secretary. After the fall of the Bolojan Government, Veștea was among the liberals who argued that PNL should remain at the negotiating table with pro-European parties and continue governing, rather than withdrawing into opposition.
In a public statement in May, he emphasized that PNL should negotiate with pro-European parties to identify a governance solution. Veștea stated that liberals need to be "where important decisions are made" and that Romania is not built solely on declarations but on projects carried through to completion.
