Simion threatens Nicușor Dan with suspension: No government is possible without AUR. AUR is not anti-Western

AUR leader George Simion emerged from Tuesday’s consultations at the Cotroceni Palace with a strong message for President Nicușor Dan: without AUR, the current political crisis cannot be resolved, and ignoring the party could even lead to a procedure for the suspension of the head of state.

The AUR delegation only spent 11 minutes at the meeting convened by the president, after the Veștea Government was categorically rejected in Parliament on Monday evening. Upon leaving the consultations, Simion had with him a file entitled „Measures to repair the errors of the Bolojan Government,” most likely containing data that he presented to the president during the brief negotiation period.

While PSD announced after consultations that they are willing to take over governance, the AUR leader stated that his party represents the key to breaking the political deadlock and that the president had lost a month trying to impose solutions that lacked parliamentary support.

"Without AUR, it cannot be done"

George Simion stated that his party came to the Cotroceni with a governance program and a proposal for a prime minister from AUR, invoking the result of the December 2024 parliamentary elections.

"I would start by repeating what I believe everyone understood yesterday: without AUR, it cannot be done. The country is going through some complicated moments," said the party leader.

He argued that AUR is the only party that respected the election result and accused the state leadership of ignoring the will of the electorate in recent weeks. According to Simion, the failure of the Veștea Government investiture attempt demonstrated that the president cannot build a parliamentary majority without the support of his party.

Threat of President's Suspension

The harshest statement by the AUR leader concerned the possibility of suspending Nicușor Dan.

Simion accused the president of making appointments that reflected "personal will," not the election result, and argued that the head of state could be held accountable if he continues in the same direction.

"If Nicușor Dan continues to violate the will of the Romanians, the logical conclusion is that we must reach the suspension and dismissal of Nicușor Dan," stated the AUR leader.

He also argued that the current political crisis was mainly caused by Nicușor Dan and Ilie Bolojan, whom he said should "take a step back."

AUR Presents Itself as a Western Partner

In an attempt to counter criticisms regarding the party's political orientation, Simion emphasized that AUR is not an anti-Western party.

He highlighted that the delegation present at the Cotroceni included MEPs Gheorghe Piperea and Adrian Axinia and invoked AUR's membership in the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, which also includes Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's party.

"AUR supports the transatlantic partnership and democratic values," stated Simion.

The party leader added that he hopes the president has understood that his party is "attached to Romanian values" and that the current government crisis cannot be resolved without AUR's involvement.

"All Cards Are on the Table"

When asked what governance formula he proposed at the Cotroceni, Simion avoided offering concrete details and reiterated that AUR desires a nomination for the prime minister position.

At the same time, he warned that all political options remain open, from forming a new government to no-confidence motions, early elections, or the president's suspension.

"All cards are on the table," said the AUR leader, insisting that Romania urgently needs a functional parliamentary majority and that minority governments cannot survive without support in Parliament.

The consultations at the Cotroceni Palace continue on Tuesday with the other parliamentary parties, as the president tries to identify a formula capable of obtaining the necessary majority for forming a new government.
