Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan categorically rejects the idea of resignation and enters into a direct confrontation with the PSD, accusing the party of „simply lying” and behaving like an opposition within the government.
The statements, made on Sunday evening on B1 TV, come just a day before the social democrats decide whether to withdraw their political support – a vote that could trigger a major political crisis.
"I will not resign," regardless of PSD's decision
The Prime Minister was firm: he will not resign even if the PSD votes against him.
"So, depending on what PSD decides in one way or another, I will not resign from the position of Prime Minister," said Ilie Bolojan.
He explained that there are no real alternatives to the current government and that no other plan has been put on the table by coalition partners. "If I saw that there was a solution, believe me, there would have been no problem to step down from this position. But there are no solutions, no other solutions have been presented," the Prime Minister said.
In this context, he says he has the obligation to remain in order to ensure the functioning of the executive in a difficult period.
"PSD simply lies" and plays the role of opposition
Bolojan launches a frontal attack on the PSD, accusing the party of artificially distancing itself from decisions made together in the coalition.
"There has been a tendency of the Social Democratic Party, through its communicators, to profile itself as an opposition within the governing coalition, criticizing measures, avoiding any responsibility, simply lying that they did not participate in one decision or another," Bolojan said.
The Prime Minister maintains that there is clear evidence that the social democrats have been part of all decisions: "From transcripts, from discussions within the coalition with witnesses, all decisions were made with all party representatives at the table."
He believes this strategy has created a dangerous climate. "A climate of political instability has practically been created, which could have negative effects for this country," Bolojan emphasized.
Message to PSD: "I do what is necessary for Romania"
Before the decisive vote on Monday, the Prime Minister sent a direct message to the social democrats. "I have no problem paying a bill, but I do what is necessary for Romania and not for the PSD," said Ilie Bolojan.
At the same time, he acknowledged shared responsibility for the current situation: "There are two parties that have a great responsibility for the situation Romania is in, one is the PSD, the other is the PNL."
Relationship with Nicușor Dan: "He did not ask for my resignation"
In parallel with the tensions within the coalition, Bolojan also spoke about his relationship with President Nicușor Dan, stating that he has not been asked to resign.
"No," replied the Prime Minister when asked if the head of state had requested his resignation.
However, he confirmed that they had discussions on the political crisis. "We discussed this issue, and we will certainly discuss in the coming days about the impending crisis," the Prime Minister added.
Bolojan described the meeting as "a clarifying discussion" about the perspectives of each party.
Warning: risk of political and economic crisis
The Prime Minister warns that a potential coalition breakup could worsen the economic situation and even affect the absorption of European funds.
"In the conditions of entering such a crisis, we need to absorb European funds through the PNRR by August," the Prime Minister emphasized.
In the absence of stability, he says, even the government apparatus slows down: "If there is no clear direction, if there is no stability, it reduces the speed of the engines."
The final decision rests with the PSD, which is organizing an internal referendum on Monday with approximately 5,000 members participating. The vote will take place both physically at the central level and online in the county organizations.
The outcome could either maintain the current coalition or trigger a political crisis, directly impacting governance and the economy.
