Ilie Bolojan set a new record on Thursday for the longest tenure as interim prime minister in the post-revolutionary period.
Today marks 72 days since Ilie Bolojan has been serving as interim prime minister, surpassing the previous record held by Emil Boc with 71 days (October 13, 2009 – December 23, 2009).
Next is Nicolae Ciucă, with 66 days of interim in two mandates (December 7–23, 2020, and October 6 – November 25, 2021).

The government led by Ilie Bolojan was dismissed on May 5, 2026 through the adoption of a vote of no confidence by Parliament.
Although 72 days have passed since we no longer have a fully empowered government, the situation does not seem likely to be resolved anytime soon.
Political leaders do not see a new government as feasible until autumn and do not rule out the possibility of early elections:

Even President Nicușor Dan does not rule out early elections, although he considers them very unlikely.
"I do not rule it out. It's not something I desire, and I think it's very unlikely at this moment, because it wouldn't make any sense. We will be in this situation, plus another three, four months of elections," said the head of state in an interview with ProTV.
According to him, early elections could only become an option in case of prolonged political deadlock with no prospects of resolution.
The President explained that the difficulty in forming a parliamentary majority is caused by incompatibilities between parties.
