For over half a day, precisely 14 hours, a convict sentenced to 18 years in prison for murder, classified as maximum security, not some petty thief, roamed freely through Romania, traveling from Bucharest to Oradea in several cars.
Luckily, if we can call it that, the man had committed, according to all information, a crime of passion, so he was not a trained gangster for extreme violence, otherwise the 14-hour journey could have been marked with a lot of blood.
Right from the start, the story, as it was even officially reported, seems like something from a low-budget movie, essentially with fools.
A convict for murder is sent by ambulance, without handcuffs and with minimal guard, for a medical consultation at a clinic in the capital. The transport vehicle is so advanced that the door, which normally could only be opened from the outside, was opened by the convict from the inside, using the seatbelt.
Let's be clear, Mezaros Zsombor is not a seasoned repeat offender, not a trained gangster, did not have any support to escape, did not benefit from any sophisticated plan. A lone man managed to flee from under escort, taking advantage solely of the incompetence of the guards, especially referring to those who designed the transport device, and the technical inadequacy of the transport.
Instead of campaigning in Arges and, more recently, the heated Brazil together with the Attorney General, for reasons only they know, Justice Minister Alina Gorghiu should be shocked by this incident, which had tragic consequences only by luck. And, especially, by its causes.
The most serious aspect is how easily one can escape from the Romanian system, an information of which I have no doubt will be exploited by someone much more professionally than Mezaros Zsombo.
The Competence of Despescu
Then, a man without documents, without money, not from Satu Mare County, so not someone familiar with Bucharest, moved as smoothly as a fish in water towards the northwest border of Romania, which he probably would have crossed just as easily if he had obtained an identity document. Cherecheș Model.
I saw images from Bucharest, how the police were searching the streets, stopping cars, when the escapee was already far away. They had no clue, in fact, where he was or in which direction he had gone.
Luckily, he was recognized by a man on the street in Oradea who raised the alarm. Not by a vigilant policeman, not by some professional team of Maestro Despescu. A man called the Police in the middle of the night and alerted them. That's how they caught Mezaros Zsombo.
"He was transported by someone. No support was evident from our data. A citizen from Bihor spotted him. We thank the person who alerted us. His route was, in essence, determined. He headed towards his home area," stated Secretary of State Despescu, this Sherlock Holmes of the Police, whose decisions led to two people being slaughtered by a demented pensioner with a knife in Bacău, all three guarded by the inept police.
Wasn't it normal for the probable route to be immediately established and swarmed with patrols? How is it possible for a man without support, as even the immovable light from the leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs claims, to outsmart an entire police force and eventually be spotted by a citizen equipped only with two attentive eyes on their face and a phone?
If the Police can do so little with a single, untrained, penniless, undocumented man, should we be surprised that the bomber from Arad has not been caught to this day? To be precise, not even the motive for that car bombing has been discovered yet and probably never will be.
The Victims of Nobody
A few days ago, a severely decomposed and mutilated body was found on the edge of the A1 highway, belonging to a woman whose disappearance had been reported a month earlier.
"At the beginning of March, there was a report of a disappearance, the police officers immediately started verifications, there were several activities in stages, questioning of individuals, checks, and at the time when the body was found, the investigation was resumed," emphasized Secretary of State Despescu.
However, the victim's sister, who reported her missing on March 6, stated to the press that until the body was found, no one had searched for her, no one had asked her anything, nothing had been done.
I personally believe the victim's sister, especially because I remember the case of Luiza Melencu, whose disappearance was not investigated because, you know, at her age, she most likely had run away with some boy. That's what the police told Luiza's mother.
The victim this time was a prostitute, so I have serious doubts that the Police went all out to find her, as Mr. Despescu claims.
On the other hand, when Ms. Șoșoacă complained of family violence, a complaint dismissed by the court, the Police rushed with a protection order and a bracelet at record speed, well, relative to the state of the equipment available.
This is how Romanian citizens' safety looks and this is how much trust the Romanian Police Air Schengen deserves.
