First for Romania: Two B-52H Stratofortress aircraft from the US Air Force have landed at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base to carry out the Bomber Task Force Europe 24-4 mission.
On their way, the American aircraft were intercepted by two Russian planes above the Barents Sea.
"NATO's eastern flank is stronger today! For the first time, B-52 Stratofortress bombers from Barksdale Air Force Base (Louisiana) have landed in Romania in support of Bomber Task Force Europe.
Allies and partner nations take advantage of any opportunity to train together, improve readiness, and promote peace and security in the European region," as stated on the Romanian Ministry of National Defense's Facebook page.
According to information provided by the US Air Force, while flying in international airspace and in accordance with international law, American B-52 bombers were intercepted by two Russian aircraft above the Barents Sea.
"The American aircraft did not alter their flight path as a result of the interception and continued their scheduled flight without incidents, thus fulfilling the pre-planned mission of the B-52 bombers, which included integrating with NATO fighter aircraft before landing at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base," the source cited.

This is the first time that American strategic bombers have operated from Romania.
"In today's global context, it is vital to be prepared to provide a wide range of viable capabilities from long distances. This iteration of the Bomber Task Force provides an excellent opportunity to refine our tactics, techniques, and agile combat procedures. (...)
Through collaborative efforts with our allies, the US enables our troops to combat current and future threats," stated General James Hecker, Commander of US Air Forces in Europe.

"The United States is committed to working alongside our NATO allies and partners along the Eastern Flank to ensure that we have the consolidated abilities and coordination capabilities necessary to maintain regional safety, security, and stability," Hecker added.
The periodic and routine missions of American strategic bombers demonstrate how the United States and NATO are prepared and well-equipped to work together with host nation allies and partners to deter threats and defend the Alliance, as mentioned in the information.
