AUR attacked the Austerity Law at the Constitutional Court: It is toxic and represents an abuse of power

The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) announced on Tuesday that it has filed a constitutional challenge against the Austerity Law, adopted by the Bolojan Government through a vote of confidence.

The party considers it „a toxic, profoundly unjust, and profoundly unconstitutional law, which represents an abuse of power committed with cynicism and contempt for Romanians and the principles that govern an authentic democracy.”

"The Government abusively used the vote of confidence procedure to impose a heterogeneous package of measures that seriously affect millions of Romanians, without real debate in Parliament. The invocation of urgency is a gross falsehood: the budget deficit did not appear overnight, and the Government had years to intervene through normal democratic mechanisms," said AUR representatives in a press release on Tuesday.

According to the party, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan "bundles cuts, discriminations, and humiliations in the same law, shoves it down Parliament's throat, and pretends it's a 'reform'."

AUR believes that the law challenged at the Constitutional Court "is a festival of poverty, inequalities, and legislative chaos" and explains why:

  • It eliminates benefits for families with children: a direct sabotage of demographic policies and the country's future.
  • Salaries are frozen, and legal compensations for unused leaves are canceled.
  • Final court decisions are postponed: an unprecedented attack on justice and the separation of powers in the state.
  • Military personnel are kept at subsistence level: a clear signal that this government respects neither the army nor national dignity.
  • Meanwhile, five deputy prime ministers and hundreds of budgetary sinecures maintain their privileges intact. The government demands "austerity" from those barely surviving, while sinecures ride in luxury cars paid for by taxpayers' money.

"This law is not only unconstitutional, it is dangerous. It paves the way for a governance where the executive makes laws without parliamentary control, ignores the Constitution, disregards citizens' rights, and undermines judicial authority. It is a model of authoritarian governance packaged in technocratic discourse. AUR calls on the Constitutional Court to completely reject this law and defend the fundamental principles of the rule of law," AUR further stated.

The initial no-confidence motion by AUR, titled "They ruined the country and now they force Romanians to pay the bill - out with the hypocritical Government," was debated and voted on in Parliament on Monday, but did not pass, as the opposition did not have the required number of votes.

In this context, the package of measures proposed by the Government to reduce the budget deficit is considered adopted.
