Alfred Bulai faces trial for sexual assault, with investigators detailing repeated abuse

Sociologist Alfred Bulai has been indicted by the prosecutors of the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Sector 1 Court, in a case where he is accused of sexual assault and abusive use of his position for sexual purposes.

The case became public after a press investigation, which reported allegations of sexual harassment by some students from SNSPA.

Accusations: psychological pressure and abuse of authority

According to prosecutors, Alfred Bulai is accused of two counts of sexual assault and two of abusive use of his position for sexual purposes, all related to the same victim.

Investigators claim that in July 2022, during an internship in the Sadova commune, the sociologist allegedly morally coerced a student to undress "by exerting psychological pressure" and taking advantage of his position of authority as an academic staff.

In another episode, in the summer of 2023, during an internship in Albac, he allegedly made sexually suggestive remarks and indirectly requested sexual favors.

Episodes described by investigators

Prosecutors further allege that during the same 2023 internship, Bulai committed sexual acts against the victim while she was in a vulnerable state induced by a panic attack.

According to the investigation, Bulai cited pretexts such as "acupuncture maneuvers" to touch her in certain body areas, and later attempted to forcibly kiss her, "by exerting acts of physical and psychological coercion."

Pressures and suggestions in 2024

Other actions retained by prosecutors concern the year 2024. In March, the sociologist allegedly made sexual suggestions and gestures in a car and later, at a meeting in a terrace in Bucharest.

Also, in May, during classes, he continued to make sexually suggestive statements and implied that the victim's professional advancement depended on her relationship with him.

Part of the accusations, dismissed due to prescription

However, prosecutors have dismissed part of the case concerning similar acts reported for the year 2014, as well as incidents from the period 2002-2003, invoked by other individuals, due to the prescription of criminal liability.

Alfred Bulai was taken into preventive custody in September 2024, but after a week he was placed under house arrest. Currently, he is under judicial control.
