Government allocates 258 million lei from Guarantee Fund to cover overdue wages at strategic companies; over 4,500 workers to be paid

The government decided on Tuesday, in an extraordinary meeting, that the outstanding salaries of employees from several major industrial companies should be paid by Easter from the Guarantee Fund, with the total allocated amount reaching approximately 258 million lei, according to News.ro.

The measure targets over 4,500 employees from Liberty Galați, Liberty Tubular Products Galați, Romaero SA, and Damen Shipyards Mangalia, companies facing difficulties but considered strategic for Romania’s economy.

The decision comes after the government adopted the necessary legal framework so that the payment mechanism from the Guarantee Fund could be effectively applied, even in situations where companies have not yet entered total deadlock.

### Peste 4.500 de angajați, vizați direct
„It’s official, it was just approved in the government’s extraordinary meeting: over 4500 people will receive their salaries, and the strategic workforce will be retained,” stated the Minister of Economy, Irineu Darău.

According to the presented data, Liberty Galați has 2,787 direct employees, Liberty Tubular Products has 162, Damen Mangalia has 1,017, and Romaero has 526 specialists.

### Companiile, declarate de interes strategic
The government included these companies on the list of economically strategic operators, citing their role in essential industries – steelmaking, shipbuilding, and aerospace.

„Through today’s decision, we are directly protecting thousands of jobs and maintaining essential industrial capacities for Romania’s economy,” emphasized the Minister of Economy.

He warned that the halt in activity, especially at Liberty Galați, could have major social effects, including an increase in local unemployment by approximately 1.8 percentage points.

### Salariile restante, plătite din Fondul de garantare
Specifically, the decision allows for the payment of outstanding salaries from the Guarantee Fund even in situations where companies are under preventive concordat or insolvency, and before they reach complete deadlock to avoid the loss of workforce and activity stoppage.

„Outstanding salaries can be paid from the Guarantee Fund, even in concrete situations of preventive concordat or insolvency,” explained Irineu Darău.

The measure comes in the context of financial blockages in these companies, which have affected salary payments in recent months, leaving thousands of employees without income.

### Impact economic major
The Minister of Economy emphasized that these companies are not just major employers but essential links in extended industrial chains.

He provided concrete examples: the steel produced in Galați is used in construction and infrastructure, Romaero ensures the maintenance of air capabilities, and the shipyard in Mangalia plays an important role in the naval industry.

### Guvernul: miza este păstrarea capacităților industriale
Authorities warn that the loss of these companies would mean not only unemployment but also a greater dependence on imports and the loss of industrial competencies that are hard to recover.

„The loss of these capacities doesn’t just mean the closure of some companies. It means a greater dependence on imports, the loss of industrial competencies, and long-term economic costs,” said the minister.

He emphasized that the state intervention is justified by the strategic stake. „This decision is not about supporting a company, but about protecting a strategic interest: jobs, industrial competencies, and Romania’s production capacity,” concluded Irineu Darău.
