Teachers have taken to the streets again. Several dozen educators protested on Monday in front of the Ministry of Education, accusing the „Bolojan Law” of hitting schools, students, and teachers by increasing the teaching workload, merging educational units, and reducing scholarships.
According to union representatives, Law 141/2025, also known as the „Bolojan Law,” includes, among other things, increasing the teaching workload in pre-university education by at least two hours, cutting resilience and excellence scholarships for students, reducing the number of merit scholarships, reducing the scholarship fund for students, merging schools with fewer than 500 students, and making changes to hourly pay, changes that „affect” the education system in Romania.
Teachers gathered in front of the Ministry of Education with vuvuzelas, flags, and banners, demanding the resignation of Minister Daniel David.
On their banners, messages such as "Education is a right, not a statistic!", "Every child needs attention, not overcrowding!", "We are tired of suffering for your mistakes!" can be read.
"Mr. Minister, we invite you to sit in that extra desk in each classroom in this country for a few days, as then you will probably learn about the laws of democracy and especially how these laws are applied.
Mr. Minister, we also invite you to be a teacher for a day in those overcrowded classrooms with 34 students, where we will surely find children with SEN who do not have support teachers, and to teach the lesson of democracy and dignity from the reality manual of the Romanian education. You do not deserve, Mr. Minister, to lead this ministry any longer!", a teacher stated on the microphone, after which the protesters chanted "Resignation!"
Unions have announced daily protests until the beginning of the school year, and for September 8, when the new school year should start, a protest rally and march from Victory Square to Cotroceni Palace, between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., are planned.
The union federations urge teachers to boycott the start of the school year by not participating in the official opening ceremonies for the 2025-2026 school year.
"We cannot participate in ceremonies devoid of content and applaud hypocritical and demagogic speeches," the union representatives state.
