Dominic Fritz, elected president of USR with a resounding score. Now waiting in line for citizenship

Dominic Fritz was elected president of the USR. The party’s internal procedure concluded on Friday. Fritz obtained the majority of votes, and there is no longer a need for a final confrontation.

Nine people ran for the position of USR president. Dominic Fritz, who held the position of interim president of the USR, received over 67% of the total votes.

In the internal race, Violeta Alexandru came in second place with 22% of the total votes.

The elections took place over the last three days. According to the statute, the president is elected through direct and secret voting on a secure electronic platform by all party members.

The election will be validated at the USR Congress on June 21.

Fritz presented his priorities

Immediately after learning the results, Fritz presented his priorities.

“My mission is to reconnect with our voters, with our allies (...) I will be a president who opens up the party (...) We will start a period of reconstruction,” declared Dominic Fritz during the press conference held on Friday after the internal election results were announced.

He also stated that he will remain the mayor of Timișoara. “I will remain the mayor of Timișoara (...) it is the honor of my life to be the mayor of this city,” explained Fritz.

"My file has not yet been processed"

He also mentioned that he is waiting to obtain Romanian citizenship.

“I have submitted my application for Romanian citizenship a year ago, I meet all the conditions (...) my file has not yet been processed. I am waiting in line like everyone else,” specified Dominic Fritz.

“It is very clear in the party law that citizens of the European Union can be members if they have a domicile in Romania with full rights, and I have exercised my right to run. I meet all the conditions. You must live in Romania for at least 4 years as a EU citizen to obtain citizenship. Obviously, as the mayor of Timișoara for 5 years, I have been living in Romania, so I meet all the conditions,” added Dominic Fritz.
