Romania picks its Eurovision 2026 representative: Alexandra Căpitănescu to perform “Choke Me” in Vienna

Romania will be represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 by Alexandra Căpitănescu, who won the National Selection final with the rock song „Choke Me”.

The international contest will take place in May in Vienna, and Romania will compete in the second semi-final, scheduled for May 14.

"I want my music to reach people," said Alexandra Căpitănescu after the announcement of the result.

In the National Selection final 2026, 12 artists and musical projects competed, including Olivia Addams, Wrs, Edward Maya, Emy Alupei, and Monica Odagiu. Among the submitted songs were "Croco", "All The Way", "Everybody Needs Somebody", and "Humans".

The final was presented by actors Giulia Nahmany and Daniel Nuță.

According to the draw held in January in Vienna, Romania will enter the first part of the second semi-final on May 14. The grand final of the competition is scheduled for May 16, 2026.

Eurovision 2026 takes place under the slogan "United by Music" and brings together 35 participating countries, including France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Israel, Sweden, and Serbia.

The previous edition of the competition was won by the representative of Austria, JJ, with the song "Wasted Love".

Romania has been participating in Eurovision since 1993, and the best results achieved so far have been two third places - Luminița Anghel & Sistem (2005) and Paula Seling & Ovi (2010) - as well as the fourth place obtained by Mihai Trăistariu in 2006.
