Two Russian diplomats have been declared personae non gratae on Romanian territory, announced the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
This means that the two Russian diplomats are to be expelled from the country.
We are talking about the military, air, and naval attaché of the Russian Federation in Bucharest, as well as his deputy.
They are accused of activities that contravene the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.
"These elements were communicated to the Russian party today, March 5, 2025, on the occasion of the convocation at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the order of Minister Emil Hurezeanu, by the acting chargé d'affaires of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bucharest," the cited source specifies.
According to the official website of the embassy, the military attaché referred to by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is Victor Makovsky, and his deputy is named Evgheni Ignatiev. The latter's name appears in the Georgescu file as a liaison with his support network.
Prosecutors, in the criminal investigation file, indicate that associates of Georgescu are in contact with the military attachés at the Russian Embassy in Bucharest, suspected of being GRU agents.
In a phone conversation recorded by investigators between Călin Georgescu and Marian Motocu, a Legionnaire militant detained by police, the defendant says, "there is a plan... an action" through which he will come to power.
Immediately after the end of the call, Marian Motocu calls the Russian Embassy in Romania, where he asks to speak with Colonel Evgheni Ignatiev, after identifying himself and providing his phone number.
Ignatiev is a highly recognizable figure in political and business circles in the country, as Spotmedia.ro has already reported.
He is a person who participates in fairs, conferences, events, asks questions, and gathers information conscientiously, according to sources from Spotmedia.ro who have seen him in action.
Although authorities are aware that he engages in espionage activities, he has not been expelled so far because, being very well-known, his effectiveness is limited, a consulted source stated for Spotmedia.ro.
Russia openly supports Călin Georgescu
Recall that yesterday the Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia (SVR) issued a statement in which it supported the decision of the Prosecutor's Office to bring charges against Călin Georgescu, claiming that the EU leadership, which wants to defeat anti-system leaders in various countries, is behind this decision.
The SVR stated that Brussels is thus waging a war against European leaders who openly support US President Donald Trump.
This is exactly what defendant Călin Georgescu says, accusing a political case, and now he enjoys the overt support of Moscow.
Recall that Georgescu is indicted for six offenses, including incitement to actions against the constitutional order.
According to information obtained by prosecutors, there are clear links between the funding of Georgescu's campaign and Russia.
In response to these accusations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had an official reaction as early as Tuesday.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifies that the recent statements of the Russian services are ridiculous and completely inappropriate. These are part of the series of hybrid actions carried out by the Russian Federation to undermine democracy in Romania."
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this set of activities, which includes public messages, influence campaigns, and interference with democratic processes, is intended to erode trust in authorities and to criticize Romania's membership in the EU and NATO.
"At the same time, these allegations are part of Russian efforts to build a narrative for their own public, in conditions where Russia does not have a free debate space or free elections. There, any opposition is incarcerated or assassinated. Criticisms against the EU or Romania also serve to divert attention from these realities," adds the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
