Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner continued his fantastic season debut by winning the trophy at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami (USA), with prizes worth $8,995,555, defeating Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the final on Sunday, in two sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Winner of the Australian Open in January, and then of the ATP 500 tournament in Rotterdam in February, Sinner has only lost one of the 23 matches he played in 2024 and will be the new world number 2 starting Monday, surpassing Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.
After two final defeats in Miami, in 2021 (against Polish player Hubert Hurkacz) and 2023 (against Russian player Daniil Medvedev), Sinner lifted the trophy for the first time at the Florida competition, also adding his second Masters 1000 title to his record, after winning last year at the Canadian Open.
Sinner dominated Russian player Daniil Medvedev (world number 4) in the semifinals on Friday, defeating him 6-1, 6-2, and on Sunday, he showed strength once again against Dimitrov, displaying a complete, precise, and powerful game.
Australian Darren Cahill, one of Jannik Sinner’s two coaches, praised his student’s performance: „I think it was incredible today (Sunday), he hardly made any unforced errors, he kept playing very long, to make every point difficult for Dimitrov. When Grigor won points, thanks to spectacular tennis, he made him take many risks.”
Following Carlos Alcaraz’s success at Indian Wells, where the Spaniard handed Sinner his only defeat of the year in the semifinals, the American hardcourt circuit confirmed that the Spaniard and the Italian are the undisputed leaders of the new generation of tennis players worldwide.
Alcaraz and Sinner will now have the opportunity to showcase their qualities on clay, facing Serbian Novak Djokovic, the current world number one with a lead of over 1,000 points ahead of the Italian, who is set to return to competition after a disappointing start to the year (defeat in the Australian Open semifinals, then in the third round at Indian Wells, and absent from Miami).
If he continues to perform at the same level as before, Sinner can hope to approach the top spot in the ATP rankings, accumulating many points on clay, a surface where he did not shine in 2023, being eliminated in the Monte Carlo semifinals, Barcelona quarters, Rome round of 16, and notably in the second round at the Roland Garros Grand Slam.
