Romania needs to quickly get out of the political crisis, but the formation of a new government depends on parties, not the president, stated Nicușor Dan on Wednesday, after attending the Ukraine – South-East Europe Summit in Kiev.
Asked if it is realistic for a full-power Executive to be appointed by the beginning of September, the head of state avoided making an estimate, only saying that he hopes the situation will be resolved „during this summer.”
The president stated that people are increasingly feeling the effects of political uncertainty.
"I believe that Romanians are waiting. Last night, coming here, I had discussions with representatives from the authorities in Suceava, and they were telling me that their interaction with people is that people are waiting, they want this uncertainty to end once and for all so they can make life plans for themselves, their families. So we need to end this crisis as quickly as possible, but the answer is not with me, it's with the parties," said Nicușor Dan.
"I don't think formal consultations are needed"
The president emphasized that the dialogue with political parties continues and in his opinion, there is no need to convene new official consultations at the Cotroceni Palace.
"Each of us, me with the parties, and the parties among themselves, are discussing. I don't think formal consultations are needed. Discussions are needed, which exist, but unfortunately, the rhetoric in which parties have settled for months narrows their negotiation space significantly," stated the head of state.
He added that the role of politicians is to show "willingness to compromise," so that a solution can be found in the interest of citizens.
Negotiations remain blocked
Nicușor Dan met on Monday at the Cotroceni Palace with the leaders of the former governing coalition, but the discussions did not lead to an agreement for the formation of a new Executive.
Romania has been led by an interim government since May 5, when the Cabinet led by Ilie Bolojan was dismissed through the motion of no confidence initiated by PSD and AUR, after the Social Democrats withdrew their political support for the Executive.
